Porsche Design has taken the world by storm. Closing out the fourth annual Madison Avenue Watch Week, Porsche Design hosted an exclusive event for its VIP guests at the Madison Avenue boutique. For this special celebration, the brand invited guests for a rare scotch whisky tasting courtesy of Balvenie. Sponsored by the Wall Street Journal, Madison Avenue Watch Week is the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week for the watch world. Porsche Design took this opportunity to preview the Porsche Design Dempsey limited edition to be launched in June. TV star and current race car driver Patrick Dempsey has collaborated with Porsche Design to release only 50 limited edition models of the Dashboard Automatic Chronograph that includes the Dempsey Racing crest and logo.

Among the many editors, staff, and VIP guests, the P'6780 Diver stole the show. This watch is a diver's dream. The super light watch is waterproof for up to 100 meters and is made of PVD -coated stainless steel, 18-carat rose gold, and caoutchouc. What makes this special? The case pops out of the bracelet. This feature is not only a "cool" factor, but also a safety feature. In order to the set the timer for one's air tank, the diver unlocks the case to access the knob at the top. Once set, the diver fastens the case back into the bracelet for locked security. In the locked position, the timer no longer is able to move.

Porsche Design also used this event as a celebration of their horological heritage of over 40 years. Finding our way to the two display cases, highlights include the limited edition Dashboard P'6612, the Worldtimer P'6750, and Heritage P'6520. The limited edition Dashboard P'6612 pays homage to Porsche Design's original Dashboard P'6600. The 6600 is truly THE Porsche Design watch as the dial mimics that of the dashboard in a Porsche car. Their new Dashboard design includes a calibre ETA Valjoux 7753 sporting an energy-optimized rotor which is reflective of the Porsche car wheel.

The Worldtimer P'7650 was the focus to world travelers in the room with its duel time zones. Seen below, the duel time zone is kept with the automatic mechanism that upon pushing a button, the second time zone is displayed on the dial. Despite the "hidden" second time zone, the watch was very clear. The numbers, date, and city was clear to the eye and the dial was very straight forward and clean.

The third watch that caught our eye was the Heritage Limited Edition P'6520 displayed with the rest of the Heritage family. The limited edition watch functions both as a timekeeper and compass. With an automatic Sellita SW300, shot-blasted titanium case, and liquid compass that can be taken out of its case, this watch was very eye-grabbing.

Keep your eyes peeled for the release of the Porsche Design Dempsey Racing Limited Edition next month. With only 50 being made, it will be a rare sighting.

That was a very original watch, at its time, sometimes used by the German Army.

Thanks for the report, but I am a bit puzzled ... ... noticing the absence of novelties: The P 6780 diver is a 2010 re-issue of the 2006 Eterna Kon Tiki Diver, the Worldtimer was launched in 2007, and the 7753-equipped Dashboard chronograph is only the answer to the lacking availablility of the ETA 2893 ...

I don't know much about the brand but people seem to LOVE the P6780 diver on our Facebook page! Quite amazing if you ask me! Cheers, Anthony

Astonishing indeed ... ... since the original Eterna version is said to have been a complete failure on the market, and the PD 6780 appeared to have not been much more successful. Both were sold with large discounts via the grey market. However, sometimes, products that lack po...

It is a quintessentially English sporting event. In the modern world it makes hardly any sense at all: a private duel between two universities that has continued, with the occasional World War interruption for 185 years. This year it was the 160th running of the race from Putney to Mortlake: a distance, by meandering river Thames of 4 miles, 374 yards. The race is rowed on the flood tide around the spring equinox; just at that moment when the tide is at its maximum volume of water and about the moment when ...
