‘1’ Robert and ‘1’ Stephen: Greubel Forsey make their debut at SIHH

Greubel Forsey made their debut at SIHH opposite one other debutant. Being only 9 months since last years Basel Fair, there were not quite the fireworks from last March. However, Robert and Stephen never disappoint and this SIHH was no exception. There were different models of existing watches, but there were inventions in the cases that indicate the possible shape of things to come. You can never tell with Greubel Forsey. Research is not a product orientated end goal; rather, research is an end to itself. Inventions are put through the EWT with the goal of learning about the invention, rather than producing something for sale. The invention might be used, might not; but you never know what you might learn along the way. Such an approach is truly laudable, and defines the Greubel Forsey approach: the attention to detail and finish the inventions that are a step forward and not some sound bite for the marketing.

It was great to see both Robert and Stephen at SIHH. In but a handful of years, a small partnership now has a booth in the main hall, and is one of the firms that attracts attention for what will be on display.

Enjoy!

24 second incline tourbillon, in platinum. Alright, I will admit from the off, that this was my favourite. I have made no secret of the fact that the 24 second tourbillon is a mechanical marvel. The speed of rotation is mesmerizing and the offset against the slower seconds hand is hypnotic. What m...

Much ado Andrew, I can admit to admiration for the microengineering explained by G-F. Well, at least for the Forsey part because I've never met the Gruebel portion of the partnership. I can relate to the scientific testing of hypotheses with reproducible test cond...

Here is the problem with proprietary research and publication ... that it may lead to ideas as yet unseen, and this is R&D capital. It is difficult to separate out what can be printed and what cannot (without giving away all your R&D for free) - think of it as if it was a pharmaceutical company! What I do know i...

Invention Piece No 3, in platinum Once again, the same watch as released in Basel, but with a different case. The relief on the dial works better with the slightly darker white metal, and as before, to be produced in 11 pieces. Why 11? ‘1’ Robert and ‘1’ Stephen!...

Double tourbillon a technique in rose gold It is surprising the difference a metal can make. While I prefer the white gold version of the Technique (more on the watch coming in a later article), mainly for aesthetic reasons, the rose gold version of the same watch is still stunning. The surprise i...

24.... but technically both technically both are light years ahead of what's out , but for color contrast and combinations i do find the 24, in white gold more appealing to me. Thanks for posting. Faisal

These are definitely way big for my wrist but.... I have to say I'm so in love with them and the way it looks (so complicated) that it doesn't really matter. One day *CL

A look at De Bethune - the De Bethune superthread

In early December, David Zanetta and Denis Flageollet were in Singapore to present the latest creations from De Bethune. I first profiled De Bethune in 2007 when I was deeply impressed after visiting them at Basel ( click here for my Basel report of that year). Two years later I am even more amazed by the brilliant creations from the company. De Bethune watches are of a sheer, high quality that is difficult to find elsewhere, coupled with a remarkable penchant for innovation.
