BaselWorld 2014 - Kari Voutilainen

Kari always knows to amaze.

Let's start with the Tourbillon-6.  This is a new tourbillon using Kari's double direct impulse escapement.  Note the size of the tourbillon cage, at 14mm almost half the diameter of the dial, which made it necessary to place the hands off center to have room.  The finishing is, as always, glowing.  The dial made in house on a rose engine.

The Hisui watch shines through the dial and bridge decoration done by the Japanese lacquering studio Unryuan.  The main raw materials for this decoration are the shell of a marine snail, the great green turban, and abalone shell.  Particularly intensely colored regions are cut out of the shells and then used for this mosaic decoration. The result is stunning, as you can see.

The movement itself is again in German silver and uses the Voutilainen double direct impulse escapement.

Thank you Thank you Don for the post and lovely photos. Kari goes from strength to strength! His movements and the quality of the finishing are second to none. To own a timepiece from his manufacture should be on the list of every true connosieur.

Thank you Don The Tourbillon 6 is mesmerizing. I imagine it is called this way not because Kari will be making only 6 of them, but because the tourbillon rests within a second's sub dial's placed at 6 o' clock, as is often the case in his work. I wonder what Kari is no...

Amazing amazing work. Both watches are just SO stunning, almost perfection!!! The only flaw I see in the movement aesthetics is the mainspring click. I don't like that very much, but i udnerstand that it follows the aesthetic conception of hte movmeent with all the screws and round fittings... so the mainspring click should be roun...

Great pix Don, but I think... ... we need some more. Nobody finishes like the Finnish watchmaker! Kari is the world's premiere independent! All the best, - Scott

Barely seems possible but the caseback view of the Hisui trumps even the dial side!!

I am usually not a fan of tourbillons which make a hole in the dial. And this Tourbillon is not, by far, among my favourite KV, but I must say that Kari's work is deeply, strongly amazing. Bravo, Kari. Nicolas

more stunning than even Kari's 28 Sarasamon... ... are these pieces actually available for sale? Highly decorated watches normally don't move me but this is practically not even a watch anymore -- this goes beyond all that -- its just an incredible work of art, very much in the Japanese miniature trad...

Rudis Sylva Oscillateur Harmonieux - the instantly compensating 'tourbillon'

Recent years have brought about a great deal of novel engineering tools and with them an abundance of watchmaking novelties. Multi-axis tourbillons anyone? Crazy constructions - no limits? It seems to me that many of those world firsts and revolutions somehow went into oblivion… Often it parers to me that the novelty factor was worn out faster than the makers could think. Few however persevered the stormy post-2008 years, and I'd like to report on one of those fascinating constructions: The Rudis Sylva Oscillateur ... .
