Automakers are frantically working to improve their capability to compete in software and services, new areas defining the industry.
Toyota’s Research Institute – Advanced Development (TRI-AD) is a Toyota group assigned the mission of autonomous vehicles. It said yesterday that effective January 2021, it will convert into a holding company and two operating companies:
The holding company is Woven Planet Holdings - it encompasses automated driving, safety technologies, mobility, and Woven City. Woven Planet Holdings will focus on agile “software-first” development processes and software architecture.
The first of two operating groups is Woven CORE, which will develop and implement automated driving technologies.
The second is Woven Alpha, which will find new business opportunities and nurture projects that extend beyond Toyota as it exists today, such as Woven City and Automated Mapping Platform. Woven City is a “prototype city” announced earlier this year.
Note: the term Woven was used as a reminder of Toyota’s origin - the company originally produced looms for weaving fabrics.
