"It's not a bag, it's a Birkin" -- Samantha "Sex in the City"

OK, I know what a Birkin is.  And by sight, I can name most of the LVs.

Maybe the Birkin is the ultimate for a woman of class and taste.  Even though I'm not a Patek collector, I would guess that a 5016 or a 5208 might fit that bill as the ultimate.

And that's probably a reasonable comparison, although most in the group would rather compare pens, cars, cameras or bespoke shoes than women's handbags.

For me the comparison is that if Nancy and I walk into a Hermes store and ask to see a Birkin, they laugh at us...."we don't have any in stock."  I'd guess I'd get the same answer at a Patek AD or Boutique if I asked to see a 5208.

However, if I go to a large online auction site, there are 70-100 Birkins at any moment ranging in price from $5K to $100K USD.  So a woman (or man) with the resources, could easily get one. But a 5208 is not accessible to anyone, but someone who will be handpicked by the Sterns.  I guess exclusivity in the watchword has its price of admission.
