Birkins and Bussers
Rolex and Pateks ...many already ARE Birkins..so are some APs and RMs.
BUT...for my series:
Carrying one says 'I have enough money to spent on one of these and I actually managed to get one'. It has status and screams wealth, however carrying one does not automatically give you taste or fashion sense.
Fashion is not about shoving an expensive handbag on your arm and forgetting the rest. Fashion is about creation, imagination and style.
Tim Gunn yesterday where he basically says the same thing –
“I frankly have serious difficulty understanding the appeal of really expensive (and by that I mean over $600) bags. Six hundred dollars is the bare minimum when it comes to those stratospheric bags. The Hermes culture of “Well it’s mad e by 60 people in an attic in the countryside of France” — to be blunt, who cares? And all these matching pelts. Who fundamentally cares? It’s a big slouchy hobo bag. It’s not as though it’s a tailored piece of luggage. I just don’t understand it. I say to people who really want to reach and are looking at $5,000 handbags, “Spend half that amount and give the other half to charity.” I just don’t like conspicuous consumption. I find it distasteful. ”
I think Tim is being something like I was, when I was asked about Patek and Rolex. I admit, I spoke off the cuff, and I do look at both these brands very seriously. I LOVE Patek and Rolex..let me say it publicly. But they don't need me. That's why I talk more of the real ones with potential.
Ever heard of a man who wants to sell you a "brand new" Rembrant? You get the idea.
Were paintings superflous items of luxury back in the "day"? Yes.
The Birkin has beaten the wristwatch to become the first commercial item to cross the wide gap of art and iconic object of post 20th century industrialism.
But it is not just about money or status, some people really love well designed, hand crafted, classic pieces that do not change or go out of style.
The resale value on a Birkin bag, even if they are more available now, is much better than on a used watch, so that is something!
Let's have some respect for classic timeless design and not always look at these things as status symbols.
