Horological Meandering

Must a "Classic" always be expensive and unaffordable to the common people?

I feel that what is lacking in the watch industry today are companies that innovate and bring incredible inventions to the common people. In fact the opposite is occurring, watch company will find any excuse to hype up a feature like a tourbillon, a small power reserve, a fly back chronograph to charge you more money. Worst, they re-package old technology and invent histories to sell you a watch.

I love Apple for the company that make complicate technology accessible to common people. Take the iPhone as an example, it is made mainly of metal and glass. In terms of ID, it is not less complex or well made than a luxury watch. The incredible Multi-touch user interface change the way people use the phone with gestures, than even a 3 year old will find intuitive. You think less man-hour goes into engineering and developing the user interface as compared to make a watch by hand? The equivalent in the watch world will have the iPhone made in platinum, diamond studded, and keeping it unaffordable, no less... The difference is Apple does not charge you a king's ransom for cutting edge innovation.

IMO the closest I have find is the co-axial escapement in the new Omega watches. Even though Omega has increased prices for their watches, at least the company is make a great innovation available to the common people and not just hyping it and reserving the invention for expensive watches.
