I think in this case....
Birkin and watches share more commons than the Iphones.
If I'm not wrong, when Bernard uses Birkin as an example, he takes into consideration of
the superlative handmade craft this bag requires.
It is made to last and age with grace, just like a good watch.
When iphone 5 is out, most will ditch iphone 4 in a second.
If you have a Gucci or LV bags , it usually will not last 2 seasons (a year). They are the same as iphone, the latest model is the in thing.

) buys lots of bags before they encounter Birkin.

They will buy more Birkins or other H bags, but always with lots of research and a sense of understanding who they are and what they want.
It's process is extremely similar to what we do when we get into this horological hobby

Most people do not even know what's a Patek to begin with or even Lange, less said about MBF , Urwerk or Dufour.
