Tourbillons

Curious, why do we (not me) buy watches with tourbillon movements, and are they necessary?

Do they reallty make a watch more accurate, a lot of COSC certified movements are pretty accurate
and can be within a few seconds a month, quartz is even more accurate.  Are tourbillons nothing
than a gimmick?  I know that if you own one YOU know what you have on your wrist, but is the
additional cost really worth it?  They are definitely an engineering marvel in something as intricate
as a wrist watch. I have never owned one and never will, but thought this may make for good
conversation.
