Patek Philippe

Imagine the bridges were solid and finished traditionally.

The Cubitus has, overall, been worth of the criticism. However, I think with solid plates we would be sufficiently fooled to stop there and just say it looks better.
The question is, did we apply the same standard of fact finding to all square shaped movements that appeared in older watches with transparent casebacks. We can't see what's underneath, so we assume the best. Were all square movements optimized to take advantage of the additional 22% surface area (4/Pi ratio), or were they basically the same round movement, with reworked plates and bridges?
I'd guess that a watch like Sylvain Berneron's Mirage is an exception. I'd suspect that most square movements have had lower performance density, compared to the round movements they were based upon..
