A Christmassy Rolex (it’s not mine, at least for now)
Happy Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone celebrating.
I’ve been trying to see this Day Date in the metal for most of this year. Most ADs I have asked have never seen one, and even the larger ones (Bucherer in NYC, WoS Rolex Flagship in London) have only seen one or two per year.
And so I was happy to find one earlier this week in…you guessed it…a gray dealer in London. I will add without naming the dealer that they were, as they have been on prior visits over the last decade or more, gracious and happy to show me the watch and chat.
So what do you folks think? Way way too much? Way way too much for a “gentleman”? Silly to spend money on a precious metal Rolex, especially one with stones?
(As a side note, this watch while difficult to source new does not generally trade at a premium from what I can see. And if an AD was ever able to source one for me I would buy it only if they agreed to bundle it with something else. If not I’d tell them straight I will just buy at a discount elsewhere).

Yes, not available in 40mm.
I prefer the one I saw, regular fluted bezel versus more stones. I do feel this reference is a bit of a sleeper.
Except London, Paris, NYC, LA and any other major western city or popular destination.

Definitely turns the sparkle up to 1000.
My initial impression was actually that is was far more sparkle than I had expected. My comparison was previously seeing the rose gold 37mm Yatchtmaster with the pave dial. That watch, was more muted.

Ah, a rainbow ay-date. I like it, but probably
wouldn't get one for myself. Definitly not an ugly watch in my opinion.

It is a nice hypothetical question for us though. In reality, not many of us could really pull this off, and fewer still could get any type of regular wear out of it.

That is how I would see it too.
It is mostly one of those collector watches, although nowhere near as collectible as a rainbow Daytona or any of the other off catalogue pieces we have seen from Rolex. It would be cool to have. But maybe, it is just limited to that, “cool to have”.
After seeing it, and realizing how much this thing shines…
…and sparkles, that is also where my head is at. Interestingly, as noted above and based on what some others have told me, the everrose version may be “better”. Although to me, I don’t see that.

I can see how the everrose version may be better visually; but then with that watch there is just a lot of gold in folks faces. And that’s fine, if you live in certain places. In most of the major world cities nowadays, one doesn’t want an all gold watch ...

I’m also under the camp that I prefer precious metal Rolexes over their steel counterparts. I also wouldn’t stress too much about being afraid to wear it. Life is too short to worry about the extremely rare possibility that you might get mugged.

well, you know how that old saw goes. Objectively speaking, it’s a stunner. But I’m not sure it holds a candle to your buckley dial DD. But that’s just me not being able to wrap my head around gem set pieces. One thing’s for sure, you can rock that piece....
