Patek Philippe Celestial 6104G and 5102RP, the celestial (mile)stones!

It has been some years now since the introduction of the Celestial dial on some Patek Philippe wristwatches.

I have to confess that I’ve never been excessively appealed by these watches. The Star calibre is another subject on the contrary.

Still I’ve realized the extraordinary appeal of a sky map on some serious collectors. This nearly unique feature, nearly specific for Patek Philippe (the Van Cleef is the other one that immediately comes to my mind) has the power to focus the desire of some of the most discerning and satisfied collectors. Why?

Patek Philippe 5102 RP

One aspect that I easily understand is the fascination for the “outer space”. If I had to choose a dream, walking on the moon would come fast. As I’m certainly not alone, if this dream could turn into reality, I’d be worried about traffic jams on the Earth’s satellite.

So to some extent Tintin may be for something in the appeal for the Patek Philippe Celestial models. Jules Verne is a more serious tempter. More recently Star Wars is a probable source of unconscious appeal building. Are you all Celestial lovers potential Jedi Knights?

In fact the notion of porthole is IMO totally present with this watch. Looking at the watch I feel like I’d be travelling in a spaceship and looking at the “window” to admire the “cyberspace”.

Maybe these watches are the most futuristic timepieces ever conceived?

Maybe they just let us look at the natural landscape we don’t have the capacity to see anymore? I’m sure centuries of lovers have admired the stars, and now we’re so much admiring the car lights on the highway…..

The date like a red moon

The date (through a central hand) on the new 6104 is a good feature for an everyday use (while the diamond ring may not be). Still I fear that the watch looses too much of its purity and I’d prefer a “simpler” 5102. But that’s not the question!

The 6104 is to some extent the more visible daughter of the unique piece auctioned last year on the same base. It is also thanks to its diamonds a more feminine option (and also thanks to its date, as my wife loves the date function, while I generally dislike it). I’d love to read women’s opinions about this special piece?

Jewelled 6104 buckle

Rarity is probably another source of interest as we seem to see so many perpetual calendar chronographs these days….

Not that I don’t like them, I’d really love to wear a 5970P on a daily basis, but I truly believe that the Celestial models are really rare, like the enamel worldtime, while the perpetual calendar chronographs are just sought after! When a watch is rare (and beautiful) each opportunity to see one is more extraordinary, more satisfying.

In fact I love to see celestial models, but that’s a 5131G that I’d like to wear!

none

Purer 5102

Another aspect that I didn’t mention yet is that the 5102 and 6104 also have the unique privilege to be associated with the extreme 5002, the revered Sky Moon Tourbillon. They are associated through the case style and obviously the magical landscape. I have little doubt un-consciously the Celestial wearers can feel that they wear the Sky Moon Tourbillon as much as they can feel that they’re getting closer to the moon.

none

A window to the sky

The last aspect that I see is that there’s some poetry in a complicated watch with no use and so little “tool” interaction with the wearer. You can’t change it, start it, use it, stop it. You can’t ask it to remind you of the reality of our world. You can just (just!) hope it to let you dream!

none

More of a daily wear

Have you ever thought of owning this piece? Do you want to share your motivations, if you’ve realized some?

Cheers

Dje

CELESTIAL As the owner of the 5102G & 5102PR I find the CELESTIAL, captures my visual sense, of coarse while considering the quality & substance of the piece. As with most we look at our watches to give an indication of the time, which can be displayed is many diff...

I'm one of those crazy guys about the Celestial. The Celestial is, with the Minute Repeater, a pure piece of Poetry. Useless? It has been made to know the exact positiion of the stars...Some would think it is useful, the vast majority would see it as an useless and expensive toy, I look at it as a pure ...

I like the Celestial... I like the 5102PR Celestial quite a bit. And I do like it to the point where I would be pleased to one day own one. However, it is not in the short list of Patek Philippe's I would like to own. The 5110P, a very simple watch is a watch that I am more keen...

formal watch and Celestial 5102 The Celestial is truely and exceptional watch, a unique watch. My choice would be the 5102, as I like YG for it's various moods, depending on the light. YG creates a very particular shine as well as a dull glance that makes the material look like as if it...

Patek Philippe 5070 : An In Depth Review.

- INTRODUCTION - When you're considering building a collection of fine Chronographs the 5070 is certainly a piece which comes or will come to your mind, along with some past or recent models such as the Lange Datograph, the Vacherons (Les Historiques / Malte / Patrimony), and the more recent Jaeger-Lecoultre Duomètre à Chronographe. All these references belong, in my opinion, to the top class family of Chronographs, and each of them has its own personality, with its flaws and its qualities which will be revealed ... .
