Merry Christmas with some snowy impressions from the RD Manufacture in Geneva!

I recently had the chance to spend two days in a Geneva to get impregnated with the spirit and the watches (of course!) from the Manufacture Roger Dubuis. It was so snowsy that on the way back I got stuck in Paris as many European airports had closed due to heavy snowfall.

I do not intend to write a report on the visit - not due to the fact its was lacking interesting impressions - quite on the contrary! It was an eye-opening visit which will result in a full series of articles... but my mouth and my keyboard will be locked although the following contains a few hints...

But enough of the preamble - fast forward in medias res! First we approach the modern building. RD is a young company with a mission!

My welcome to an incredible world...

We moved upwards, slowly...

... and arrived at an important floor, a vexing one (note: none of the people are photographed directly!)...

and enjoyed the view of RD's president, Mr Georges Kern, on his desk:

I meet a young watchmaker and discussed - not women, but another topic with 'w'...

Being fully prepared we now dare to take the first glimpse into the 'adytum': Cleanliness...

... and watchmaking! But not this time, my friends, allow me to skip the manufacture of parts, the multi-millon € machines ejaculating tiniest pieces with immense talent. I'd like go right into the value addition performed by human hands. Did I mention RD has a mission?

Precision is one!

Independence another...

But there is another one, a very unique one - watchmaking excellence, certified!

This requires special efforts...

... and comes with certain procedures to be followed...

... that are time- and effort-intensive!

But the result - this is what we all crave for:

The efforts are certainly rewarded:

A sign of excellence!

NOW the entire picture is slowly emerging:

Sparkling and living!

Finally I am ready to head to the RD Boutique in Geneva to get a taste of the watches:

A few impressions and samples only, there is much more to come next year!

Meanwhile, day cleared the space for the night to come. Geneva was dressed and ready for Christmas, ...

I allowed my brain to rest and digest the impressions.

One thing is sure, I thought, the good spirit is back at RD!

With these images I'd like to wish you all a very happy Christmas time and festive season, and a healthy, prosperous and peaceful year 2013!

Goodbye until after the days, with full energy (and well-fed, I suppose!)!

P.S.: A huge thank-you to the team of the Manufacture RD and the RD Boutique - you were marvelous hosts and knowledgeable guides!

I may have to start Roger Dubuis collection again Thanks Magnus for the Christmas teaser. Long ago, outside a chip shop in Walthamstowe :-) ....seriously, it was not Walthamstow but Singapore. The current Mrs MTF and I used to collect Roger Dubuis watches. In those days (2001), they made the infamous 28-...

Dear Melvyn and your 'current one': I guess I have good news for you... the RD team was proud to inform me that they just have gotten the word from the Richmond top management that their reliability rates are now within the Richmond standard. They were free to admit that this was a very weak point in the past. Cheers, Magnus

I believe The failure rate for current collection is in fact above average I.e. betters than some of the peers among the group! What remains are the projects to improve older movements, I.e.. per-richemont pieces bravo to the team!

Great photos, I actually live a few minutes from them whenever I'm in Geneva but still haven't made time for a visit, you've inspired me to get on that.

I already had the opportunity to present you the Pink Gold Monegasque Automatic last year with my Roger Dubuis report after the Salon Belles Montres 2011: I would like to come back to the Stainless Steel version further to a loan from a friend who gave me the opportunity to enjoy his watch for more than a full day. In the same way that the Stainless Steel Excalibur 42 mm Automatic presented at the beginning of the year, this Monegasque is a part of the entry level of Roger Dubuis. Defining such kind of watch ... .
