Starting from Scratch - fascinating hints for Roger Dubuis' SIHH 2014

Re-inventing the classic watch - a tedious task.

The Manufacture Roger Dubuis had one single collection that was a defining streak fro the brand and an orphan at the same time: the Hommage Collection. Being one of the very first offerings (and one of the few where you could consider the brand and its founder being one and the same ;-)) it was nearly abandoned in the wake of the oversized, crazy and - mmhh - 'out-there' pieces.

At SIHH 2013, a bright sign of light was suddenly visible: the RD Hommage Tribute to the Minute Repeater (see my article here):

none

Its success with the press, the retailers and the customers must have been tremendous. With its teaser/countdown series of videos RD published the brand prepares us all for a complete new interpretation of the preeminent Hommage collection.

The series is aptly called: “Goodbye cuckoo, #Helloextraordinary”  (see my announcement here) and thus gives us already a precise idea on the defining objectives for the rejuvenated Hommage collection:

- get rid of the past's dust (the cuckoo part)
- expect something unusual (the extraordinary part)

This all is a most contemporary interpretation of Mr Dubuis' motto: "We always wish to create timepieces of today, inspired by, but not subject to, the past which projects itself into a future that belongs to everyone".

Now let's wheat we can decipher so far:

First, we have to do away with the boundaries of the old, overcome past is symbolised by a cuckoo clock, the epitome of the . There are many ways to do it:

(i) wrap it (20 December 2013):

none

(ii) crush it (21 December 2013):

none

(iii) burn it (22 December 2013):

none

(iv) trow it out of the (golf) ball park (23 December 2013):

none

(v) submerge it (25 December 2013):

none

(vi) make sure nothing preserves (04 January 2014):

none

(vii) bury its remains (03 January 2014):

none

Second, you have to try to identify the key defining elements you want to preserve:

(ix) transform it (24 December 2013):

none

(x) totally revise it (26 December 2013):

none

(xi) crack its code (27 December 2013):

none

(xii) remove the superfluous (28 December 2013):

none

(xiii) allow yourself to fail, often (29 December 2013):

none

Third, we may start thinking about a newborn version:

(xv) start from a blank page (31 December 2013):

none

(xvi) with a fresh cut (02 January 2014):

none

What else while come?

More in the next few days!
Magnus…

... in total anticipative mood!

Interesting way to give hints I think this year's watches will amaze many. RD seems to be heading in a great direction now, and we'll see more collectors revisit the brand. Cheers, Anthony

Roger Dubuis always paid significant attention to its female clients and offered an abundance of tempting feminine timepieces. The new Excalibur collection was joined by some really outstanding ladies' watches earlier this year as the Excalibur 36 Limited edition - Jewellery saw the (stage-)light: Housed in a white gold case of just 36mm diameter, a truly sparkling watch which reveals some fantastic individual jewellery techniques only upon closer inspection The roman numerals masterfully play with the incoming light. In fact, they are produced using a metal coating on a disk made of sapphire crystal, while the latter covers a dial paved with diamonds, including the areas beneath the roman numerals! In total, 560 diamonds adorn this limited edition of 88 timepieces in and outside of this magnificent watch: Aren't the smooth and elegant lines of the diamond inlet just adorable? I cannot take my eaves of the areas where the lugs join the case band... It is driven by a Cal.
