The 2012 SIHH PuristSPro Live Report

- Jon Z. (Z3)

Roger Dubuis

For a brand that used to introduce many new designs every year, this year is relatively tame for one of my favorite brands at SIHH.

The new line introduced this year is Pulsion, which features a combination of the traditional side of watchmaking (such as open-worked dial with Cote-de-Geneve pattern), and modern elements (e.g. raised sapphire crystal, rubber strap).

For now, the line includes a chronograph and a skeleton tourbillon.

Here are the pieces from the Pulsion line, what do you think of them?

The short lugs and the rubber strap makes the watch comfortable to wear.

The new Excalibur 43mm - the watches now have a thinner profile.

There are also 3 special dials introduced this year in the Excalibur collection - deep blue lapis lazuli, white mother of pearl, and black onyx.  These beautiful dials resonate strongly with me, and my favorite by far is the lapis.

My overall feeling for RD, a brand that I am quite emotionally attached to, is a bit mixed this year. The Pulsion line is the centerpiece. Although it is certainly interesting and I can certainly understand why a lot of people would love it,  in my opinion it's really a lot of elements all merged into a dizzy watch. It feels a bit busy,  over-engineered, and does not highlight a particular bold design that RD watches of the past are so famously known for.

In a way, even though the line wants to be futuristic and avant-garde, actually appears to me to be too "traditional" for a Dubuis.

The new Excalibur on the other hand, represent bold RD design with wearability and an old-world elegance - great job!

Yours Truly,

Jon Z. (Z3)

Better then I thought I like the Pulsion more then I initially did, though the chronos are so shiny that it is a bit hard to tell from pictures how they'll look in "normal lighting". The new thinner Excalibur is better then the old design, but it's another that i'd have to see...

The Excaliburs are amazing and it's a return to tradition for Dubuis. Not a huge fan of the Pulsion though - seemed a bit too busy and too reflective for me. Jon

I am at least glad to see... ... traditional shape cases (read: round) from RD. Call me an old man, I am still attraacted to the Hommage series..... They are making progress - looking forward to the further evolution. Thanks for the report, Jon! Ken

You would like the Excalibur with black Onyx dial Ken! It's well-made, classical, and has that distinct Dubuis flair. Though the diameter might be a bit big for you. Jon

Disapointing and shocked by a "detail" Thanks for your report Z3 and the job you did, I may be hard in my comments. The Monaco was very promising, a return to more normal and classy size, still some personnality, a superb watch, when I see the novelties, I am sad. The Pulsion is not what I hop...

Actually, Francois, I share some of your sentiment I was not happy with the cheap-looking rotor, especially compared with what they had in the past! I yearn for the days when Roger Dubuis was still a relatively small production houses - they've made some bizarre complications, but the products "looked" ex...

keep faith Jon They made the Sympathie, especially with the big lugs in 37mm, a marvel of baroque, that is my Dubuis reference. I hope they will go back to something more personnal. The caliber have improved from refiend exterior calibers to beautiful in house, with an ...

Interesting comments there Especially re: Rotors. I reflected the exact same comments at the show and it's not clear whether this is the final 'design' of the rotor on the production model. I'll try to dig out some more details and report in due time regarding the rotor design.

Agree I fully agree--- the Pulsion line is a total disappointment. Looks like a common blancpain crossed with an invicta. Terrible in my opinion. This is a huge step backwards for an iconic brand. Very sad.
