BaselWorld 2014 - Arnold & Son John Arnold (*1736 in Cornwall) was one of the famous watchmakers of the generation of Abraham-Louis Breguet. His timepieces where instrumental in solving the longitude problem for the British Navy and his "Nr. 36" was the first timepiece to be called a chronometer. Today Arnold and Son is a Swiss brand in La Chaux-de-Fonds owned by the independent movement manufacturer La Jout-Perret...">Story

Breakfast with Martin Braun

Avatar

One day, I got an email from a good friend of mine, a Switzerland lawyer, inviting me to breakfast meeting. He said that he wanted me to meet someone there. I was quite surprised to meet Mr. Martin Braun himself! I had an unexpectedly wonderful breakfast with him (and his distributor in Japan and my lawyer friend)......">Story

Hands on review of the Gustafsson & Sjögren Bifrost Isbla

Avatar

Bifrost is the brand new collection from the duo Johan Gustafsson and Patrik Sjgren. It symbolizes the come-back of the use of an automatic movement but more importantly the introduction of a new type of stainless damascus steel. Bifrost is the name of the sacred rainbow bridge which creates the link between the Earth and the Realm of the Gods in the Norse Mythology. The question is to know if the watch meets the expectations provoked by such name! Like it is often the case with any G&S, the aesthetics are the main point of interest...">Story

Hands on review of the Stepan Sarpaneva K1 "Emali"

Avatar

I discovered the K1 "Emali" in its stainless-steel version at the 2013 SalonQP. I have to confess that I was not very seduced at that time because I found it too quiet to fully match the traditional universe of Stepan Sarpaneva which is enchanting and quirky, almost mysterious and melancholic. The K1 "Emali", to my eyes, seemed to lack contrast and spice what was a bit paradoxical when we know the boldness of its creator. At the 2014 Baselworld Fair, Stepan Sarpaneva presented a Pink Gold version and I changed .....">Story

BaselWorld 2014 - Kari Voutilainen Kari always knows to amaze. Let's start with the Tourbillon-6. This is a new tourbillon using Kari's double direct impulse escapement. Note the size of the tourbillon cage, at 14mm almost half the diameter of the dial, which made it necessary to place the hands off center to have room...">Story

BaselWorld 2014 - Romain Gauthier Romain Gauthier's Logical One is stunning both for its new approach to a constant force mechanism and for its level of finishing. Using traditional elements, but transforming them for use in a modern wrist watch Romain Gauthier has created a flat chain-and-fusee style constant force mechanism. The Logical One Secret watch adds a cover to the watch which leaves the small dial freem but covers the rest of the mechanism. This provides a large surface that can and will be decorated by many different techiques in the future...">Story

BaselWorld 2014 - 4N We have been following 4N for 4 or 5 years now. From their first presentation at BaselWorld of a electric motor driven model to show the display, through the first prototypes and a shop visit I made at Renaud and Papi to see where they are built. That first presentation I didn't even mention here. I thought it would never work...">Story

BaselWorld 2014 - Xusha Ma Xusha Ma displayed his very charactoristic timepieces at the AHCA stand. Xusha Ma's timepieces are unmistakable and playful. The jump between very organic mother-of-pearl and the sober industrial design of his cases is taken without a question along with the steam-punk style of some of his winding mechanisms. His Nr.1 tourbillon has a neat crimpt sheet metal strap, minimal technology with maximum usefullness...">Story
