A Three Year Photo Review of the Montblanc Dual Carbon Sport Chronograph

Yesterday, a fellow Purist emailed to ask me about my Montblanc Dual Carbon Sport Chronograph.  In 2011, after one year of ownership, I posted this review.

I guess I should now post my three year review.

Since its initial purchase over three years ago, the MB Dual Carbon Sport is the only constant watch in my usual rotation. Even today, this chronograph gets worn at least twice a week.  Quite honestly, no other watch in my collection gets the same wear and tear.  The fact that it NEVER makes its way into the bank safe deposit box is a testament to this watch’s lasting style and usability.  The only thing that has been changed since its initial purchase in 2010 is a new strap and replacing the deployant for a regular tang buckle for comfort.

Functionally the watch still keeps accurate time.  Now it is running about +15 seconds a day so perhaps it is time for a servicing.  In my humble opinion, I expected worse.  For example during this past week alone, the MB Sport has been to the beach, exposed to salt water and sand for 8 hours AND it was also worn all day at an amusement park.  In the past, I would have worn a quartz watch but the MB Sport has proven itself…even for a mechanical chronograph.

Most importantly the Dual Carbon Coating has held up and amazingly the watch still looks new after three years.  Don’t believe me?  Take a look.  I took photos of the lugs, the bezel, the edge close to the crystal, and the back.  These are the areas where I thought the coating would be the most susceptible to scratching, flaking, or damage.  These photos are not enhanced nor altered in any way except for cropping and compression to reduce loading time.  Pardon the dust…the coating is still a magnet for them as well as fingerprints! (photos taken earlier this month)

If anyone wants photos of different views please ask.  I think this is the most important feature of this watch and so far it has exceed my expectations.  A homerun for Montblanc.

Enjoy, Mike

I'm very surprised by the resistance of the coating It is a strong (and positive) surprise for me. Thanks a lot for the 3 years report! Fx

so am I. I didn't think it would last so well... I wear my watches carefully, but I like to wear my watches wherever I go. I would have thought it would have picked up a few nicks and dings by now but it hasn't Mike

Fantastic Your 2011 review is one of the reasons I became a member of Puristspro. And so nice to see a 3 yr. Thank you for the update. See you at the 5 yr anniversary.

Thanks for the kind words I'm glad the review helped. I suspect I will be doing a 10 year review...although by that time my son will be 15 and he will be the perfect person for it. If I can't damage the coating, I am sure he will find a way :-) Mike

Amazing DLC! Great first review (I haven't read that before) and I am glad the DLC is as good 3 years later! I had a watch with DLC before and after 1 year, a few small bits had chipped off (very small bits though but not obvious). I believe these are due to knocks. T...

Hi Robin....there is a difference between your watch and this one This MB undergoes two treatments...hence the "dual carbon" name The problem with regular DLC flaking is because the stainless steel underneath is softer. So when the case is dinged, the stainless steel indents but the coating on the surface "flakes" off. ...

A very rugged looking watch. Is it suitable for daily wear and how is the weight on your wrist?

yes, I'm wearing it as I type and I wear it at least twice a week Here are the specs: The all black case is 44mm in diameter, 15.8 mm thick and weighs in at 165 grams. For comparison Panerai base logo weighs approx 137 grams, Rolex Yachtmaster on bracelet 139 grams. A bit top heavy but couple it with a nice strap and ta...

Amused with amusement park... Good to hear that the watch is performing great after three years! Especially with such thorough usage at sand and beach and at amusement parks. The watch looks like it's in great shape. The strap at the 12 o'clock side, is it becoming loose? Looks like i...

A letter from Alexander Schmiedt

For PuristS who have never met Alexander before, he is (imho) one of the warmest, down to earth, passionate, and honest executives in the industry. This spontaneous letter to help Robin celebrate his recent Villeret purchase is representative. So I asked permission from both to share it with our community. Dear Robin, My sincere congratulations - not only for the purchase of this beautiful Villeret- but also for the joy and passion about it that you share with others!! It is great to read about your "relationship" about your Villeret, how you write about it like almost a new family member, the great places you take her ( love the india photos!) This is exactly why I will actually share your post with the team in Villeret when they are back from the "watchmaker holidays" next week.
