Current model GMTs - what is you cup of T?

Avatar

Taste is a fickle beast. What works for one person is anathema to another. Bottom line is that there is, and never can be, a definitive right or wrong when it comes to personal taste. Similarly, the reasons why one person buys a watch is, by definition, unique to that person...Story

Friends, This is a somewhat special post, but rather than going on about some personal milestones, I’d rather look at historic milestones of Girard-Perregaux! The modern collection of Girard-Perregaux outside the Haute Horlogerie with the iconic Three Golden Bridge Tourbillon, consists mainly of 3 model lines: The Vintage 1945 The 1966 collection The Laureato And all three lines have their historic vintage watches. Putting them together like this, took me years of effort but a great outcome as it is so important ... ...Story

A 2-watch collection from Patek Philippe : all periods, budget $1m

Imagine that you could choose a 2-watch collection from Patek Philippe (i am pushing this lower and lower every time!). The only limitation is that there needs to be some financial limitation on what you can choose as 2499s need to come off the table. So, arbitrarily lets set a range of $0.5m-1m as the kitty to go shopping. For me, I need a 2-watch collection to cover as many of my uses for watches as possible...Story

The Vacheron Constantin Overseas event in Paris

Avatar

There is something strange in Paris which is very typical of the French behaviour: 90% of the watches events are organized on Tuesday or Thursday. Why? Because on Monday, it is the day after the week-end so brands think that people are busy, Wednesday is kids' day and Friday we leave Paris to spend the week-end somewhere else. And the sad side of the story is that with only two days available, we can have several cocktail parties the same day. But at Vacheron, they try to do things differently and the latest .....Story

A story of friendship - and a Seiko 6602-8040. Arigato Art-san!

A long, long time ago, four Purists met in Zagreb. Damjan, Padj, Art and yours truly. As so often at these events watches were discussed, bread was broken, online friendships cemented in real life. Art even showed us his trademarked photography approach and I am sure the waiters at a particular bar are still discussing that odd group, who kneeled before the sofas instead of sitting on them Art then topped this in a gesture truly worthy of a Purist and decided to send me a watch, because he felt it would fit .....Story

Deliberations on Dials, Part 2: Form vs Function

Avatar

This is the second in a series on Dials and the significant role they play in our watch appreciation. As shown in Deliberations on Dials, Part 1 (CLICK TO VIEW) , dials can act as the "Marketing Department" of the watch. They not only draw us in with their beauty, but can also reveal technical details about the watch. Although you might think of the dial as primarily cosmetic, the dial performs important functions, which I hope to unveil later in this series...Story

A (short) visit with Stefan Kudoke and his small atelier in Dresden - origin of the in-house movement Kaliber 1

Avatar
Ornatus-Mundi
Stefan Kudoke is a kind of a lone warrior who successfully created his own niche of nicely skeletonised and hand-engraved watches. Just before BaselWorld, Stefan upped his game with his first in-house movement, the Kaliber 1 , developed in cooperation with Habring2 and UWD. At the end of last year I seized an opportunity that presented itself ad hoc to spend sone spare time in his atelier in Dresden. Stefan’s atelier is located in the beautiful baroque quarter called ‘Neustadt at the ‘other’ side of the Elbe .....Story

Jaeger Lecoultre Master Compressor Diving GMT: The review of a Blast from a not so distant past.

It was in 2007 when Jaeger Lecoultre decided to unveil their modern diving watch, the Master Compressor Diving GMT. Modern, it can be called so, as this watch was conform to the norms in that matter ( ISO 6425 ): - Protection against inadvertent rotation for the bezel. - Indication that the watch is running. - Water Resistance with a minimum of 100 meters...Story

Hands-on with the Girard-Perregaux Laureato Chronograph 42mm, Ref 81020

Avatar

Finally, I have been able to take the Girard-Perregaux Laureato Chronograph hands-on and report on it with my personal impressions. Ever since it’s rebirth in 2016 with the Anniversary Laureato, the Laureato has quickly become a key successful line for Girard-Perregaux. We know of course that GP is much more than only Laureato, take the classic Vintage 1945 or 1966 line or the Haute Horlogerie pieces, but the Laureato has hit a sweet spot where it gets much attention. At SIHH 2018, the Chronograph was added .....Story
