5235G, but it is close
I have currently the same question and am leaning towards the WG model for my 40th birthday. But it is a close call.
What speaks to me from the white gold model:
- it is the original version of that reference and looks more technical
- It looks more understated and only those in the know know
- I have already a rose gold Patek (5170R) and matching rose gold Patek cufflinks
- The colour scheme makes it look a bit more casual
What speaks to me from the rose gold model:
- the movement is said to be a bit more hassle-free (it has also 2 more rubies), at launch of the 5235G it took Patek almost 2,5 years to bring them to market
- Readability is a bit better (even though the white hands look a bit cheap, frosted white gold or something like that would have been better)
- It looks more premium to the untrained eye and dresses up a bit more
My wife is 100% on the rose gold model, just because of readability and more premium looks but who are we if we would always listen to our wifes. 😆

Patek Philippe 's Annual Calendar Regulator was launched in 2012 with a white gold case, ref. 5235G-001 . This initial white gold model was discontinued in 2019 and replaced by a rose gold version, ref. 5235/50R-001 , which is still in the current catalog...

RG for me. The dial is so much more legible and honestly, I think this reference deserves the appearance of a precious metal.
White gold/platinum, although beautiful for me does not convey the richness as yellow or rose gold. I’m sure some people appreciate the fact that the lighter metals are less conspicuous.
I definitely understand your preference and I also find the RG version appealing.
I just don't fully warm up to the white hands which feel a bit toy-like to me (just my personal feeling, of course). And I would really like to see the WG in person someday. Best, Emmanuel
All are very good looking Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Regulator watches.
For me it would be the first watch in the pictures with the slightly darker grey dial and the black sub dials and minute track, it is just the one I find the most visually appealing. Marc

White gold all the way for me!
I thought I would prefer the rose gold, but when I saw it in the metal I was disappointed. The case and dial were not harmonious to my eye, and the painted white hands bothered me. The original in white gold is high on my “Want List”.
Like you, the painted white hands bother me.

It’s definitely worth seeing.
Far more understated than the current iteration, in my opinion, and hence works better for me. The new one seems uncomfortably “blingy” in the metal. Very much a matter of personal taste in any case. (Terrible pun!)
My best story about this reference is this -
I was in Sicily summer 2024 staying at San Domenico Palace in Taormina and saw a guy who was completely covered in tattoos swimming in the pool with the RG reference... on a leather strap…. I was so worried about this beautiful microrotor movement …

I've only seen it a few times from a bit of a distance....
On the wrist of a client of mine who could easily afford any timepiece, including those sold for millions at auctions.... It certainly speaks volumes that he chose that piece above countless other options. I'd definitely like to examine one in person....
This timepiece mixes the iconic "Padellone" case (coming from the 3448)
with an unusual complication for PP: the regulator. So it is definitely a very special watch.

Rose Gold is my favorite as well.
The 5235R has long been my favorite annual calendar from Patek. The combo of rose gold and charcoal/black subdials along with the engraved Patek logo is awesome. I was fortunate enough to try one at Wempe in NYC last summer. Pictured here with my son admi...

This is a wonderful perspective for your 40th birthday. I agree with all your points. My only problem is that I’ve never seen the G in person yet, whereas I’ve tried on the R twice. Until I see the G in the metal, I’ll hold my judgement. But one thing is ...
