Independents

A Taxonomy Problem.

This raises a broader question: where does Hermès actually belong in watch brand classification? The traditional categories fail us here:

  • "Fashion Brand" – Dismissive and inaccurate given their manufacturing depth
  • "Independent" – Reserved for artisanal makers like Dufour, Voutilainen, or Greubel Forsey
  • "Manufacture" – Technically correct but usually implies brands within Swatch/Richemont/LVMH
  • "Maison" – Perhaps the most accurate, recognizing serious watchmaking within a luxury house

Hermès (and Chanel with their Monsieur) represent something relatively new: diversified luxury conglomerates with vertically integrated watchmaking manufactures, operating outside the major watch groups. They've transcended "fashion brand" status through serious investment, but they don't fit the small-scale artisanal "independent" model either.

Perhaps we need a new category: "Maison Horlogers" or "Integrated Luxury Houses" – brands that have earned manufacturing legitimacy while maintaining their broader luxury house identity.

What do you think? Does the industry need better terminology to acknowledge this evolution?
