GF HM1 and 2 are not that handmade
For instance, they start their case making process with a nicely shaped and rounded metal that already looks like a case, vs a piece of raw and straight metal rod by Roger Smith. Besides, the HMs are double the price of RS despite a different handmade starting point (more hours needed to process that metal rod into a watch case).
Thanks to my AD, we have a small community of RS owners who gather, once in the presence of Roger himself to talk about watches. The owner of my AD has a collection of GD and RS watches. From a "quality" perspective, we could only opine there are haters who use the same image again and again to thrash the brand, because ours are good. We are coming from owners' perspective. I also personally know 3 other IG accounts, seasoned watch collectors, who are perfectly happy with their RS. RS doesn't make that many watches and we represent a good percentage of ownership experience.
Finally, RS uses CNC to drill holes into the case to ensure better water resistance for more precise gasket positioning. That to me is a sensible approach. There are independents who don't recommend washing our hands with their watches.

Many of their watches have objectively sloppy mistakes and they aren’t completely hand made. There’s no excuse for it given haldimann is handmade and not sloppy. Very confusing to me.

quillandpad.com IMO, these are not acceptable flaws on a 6 figure watch. Like I said, Haldimann is similarly priced but pieces like his tourbillion are much more complicated and free of defects. Plus he is handmade! Same with Greubel of course.

RWS is the most overrated watchmaker in the world.
This is a sentiment that is being shared more frequently among collector circles, albeit privately.

Lots of opinions, I think all are true and perspective depends on timing and price. Earlier watches aren't the same as later watches, old pricing isn't the same as new pricing. At today's pricing I think it's hard not to be skeptical of RWS watches.
The older watches definitely had a hand made feel with finishing flaws totally visible to the naked eye. I was actually surprised when I saw my first IRL, figured most of the issues seen in photos would be too small to see without a loupe but that wasn't ...

I just think it's funny how much praise he receives while guys like Haldimann are largely ignored but put out objectively amazing watches...
The Daniels story is a nice one. Hard to blame the guy for milking the legacy, he put his time in, and the new watches do look good. As long as people know what they're buying eyes wide open it's all good.
I think were it gets problematic is confusing old RWS and new RWS both product and pricing. We know FPJ isn't making any watches today, we know PD (or his daughter) is finishing every watch today, with RWS I think there's some murkiness around what is yes...
You're absolutely right that presenting the watches in series gives a wrong idea of harmonious continuity.
