a large part of the currently existing mechanical movements are not protected by any patents or similar.
The max time a patent can protect a design or principle is about 20 years - and in some rare cases this can be extended to 25 years (for medical things for example, where the testing alone can take years after filing the pat.).
So, almost any of the "classics" is free to be copied by anyone who wants to do so. That's one reason we see nonETA Valjoux 7750, 2824........
