Independents

Unfortunately, fame can make people greedy

I don't think one can make a blanket statement about all independent watchmakers, but this one in particular has decided to leverage his fame for more money.  GPHG and some collaborations where his name is attached to a watch just for a simple movement design seems to be enough to make him charge an exorbitant amount of money for the watch pictured.  I find that there is a big range of pricing among independent watchmakers.  Most start out as delivering a product seen as a bargain and having a lot of value, but as word spreads through YouTubers and watch blogs, 2 things happen:  prices go up and the order book becomes filled translating to a waiting time in years.

It's clear that certain watchmakers and independent brands are targeting really, really wealthy collectors with promises of exclusivity and rarity.  Some wealthy people feed on that and don't give a crap about value b/c they don't blink when given an exorbitant price.

Microbrands seem to still deliver best value, but you won't find high horology there.  You will still find fun and that brings me joy.
