Independents

When it comes to watch collecting

no one is being forced to buy a watch and we all tend to focus on watches in our price budgets.  Irrespective of a price of a watch, there will always be a market for it due to its movement finishing or complication. The Raul Pages may seem expensive but it is a relative bargain compared to a RW Smith Series One which is priced three times more. No one seems to even comment on a Voutilainen Vingt 8, a three handed watch that is the grail of many including me. In fact it has taken me 14 years after meeting Kari to decide on placing an order due to the price and my available funds but such is its allure irrespective of it being a three handed watch.

The demand for a three handed Raul Pages, Akrivia, Rexhep, RW Smith, Dufour, Frodsham, Ferdinand Berthoud, Greubel Forsey, Voutilainen, Brette, Peterman Bedat will always outstrip its supply and I salute these brands for making watches a work of art. People who buy these watches are not simply buying a three handed watch, they are buying something bespoke that is very rare. And notice from the names mentioned, most of them also happen to be great investments and will appreciate in value. So if they were really so over priced at list price, why would these watches command a higher price in the secondary market?!

People buy independents not because they are cheap even though there are many budget independent brands in the market. They buy independent brands because they want something different from what the big brands offer. Some buy from independents because one gets to meet the watchmaker which is missing from the big brands. But we all have a choice. Buy what makes us happy. The increase in the number of independent brands over the years shows that the demand for their watches have increased dramatically as more and more people begin to appreciate what watchmaking truly is.

A three handed Voutilainen costing more than the Raul Pages
