When the 5970P originally rolled out , early this year, my initial reaction was quite positive, as I was very pleased that Patek decided to use a black dial as the last iteration of the famed 5970 series. The black dial makes this piece very traditional, and has always one of my favorite dial colors of past Patek complicated pieces (not to mention rare, ie: to my knowledge only 4 "black dial" Patek 2499 were ever produced).
However, upon seeing the original Patek factory PR pictures, I was a bit disappointed, as the black dial looked somewhat "flat" in appearance. This past week was my very first "real life" viewing of the 5970P , with black dial,....... all I can say is O.M.G what a dial,.... what a watch!!!!
Being an existing owner of the 5970G, I would categorize the silvery dial color of the my 5970G as both elegant, and sublime. The one word that best describes the Black Dial 5970P is "striking". The 5970P, understandably, has a more sporty appearance, and contrary to some other observations, is very legible. I especially like the white second hand, which is not only very functional, against the ebony background, but also somewhat traditional , as it's also found on other classic black chronographs of past era's. In additional , the "gun metal grey" solid gold markers and hands also seem to "sparkle" more, set off by the stunning black background of the dial. The ebony dial, just seems to pop, from the beautiful framed white metal casing.
My wife, a non-wis, but over the years, due more to patience, and understanding, has tolerated my obsession with watches. I have always sought her opinion, as her taste, in all material goods, I very much respect. When she saw the 5970P, with black dial , her initial reactions was; " it was the best looking watch that she has ever seen". As many serious collectors on this forum, you may not but too much weighting on a "non-wis" opinion, but I have to also admit, after seeing this watch, it could possibly be the "best modern watch" that I have ever seen.......at any price point. The Patek 5016, one of my long time favorite modern watches, comes very, very close, but I prefer the proportions, and dial layout of the 5970 (personal opinion). Aside from the 5016, no other modern watch is as strikingly beautiful as this "black dial" 5970P (IMO).
The only criticism I have, and one that will ultimately lead me not to buy the 5970P,....is the weight of the watch. For me , the PT case is simply too heavy, and not comfortable on my wrist. As such, I will probably never own a 5970P, but will always have "lusting" impressions of the magnificent time-piece.
In short, if the 5970P was made in any other metal (other then PT). I would run, as fast as I could, to buy this "Black beauty", as the dial is absolutely mesmerizing.
Cheers,
Arthur.
