Patek Philippe

PP makes overhyped mass market products but a few gems too

PP has maybe the best marketing department. The way they advertise is remarkable. Apart from usual means of AD they don’t bother to bid on auctions and inflate prices. For example: not long ago a steel chronograph was sold for about 12 mil. dollars. The AD effect of such event yielded much more than the price paid (maybe it was a real collector, but I doubt it).

Strong points:
1) minute repeaters (though most of them are not finished up to highest standards)
2) some chronographs (like 5370 or 5959)
3) resale value of some watches
4) some real beautiful watches
5) 5959 (this is maybe the best watch ever made)

Weak points:
1) inadequate pricing
2) poor movement architecture (for example their calendars are a joke with 4 pushers and you can break them easily while setting)
3) aftersale service (too long and expensive)
4) very few own movements
5) quality of finishing (it degraded over time)
6) little technical innovation (when did they make their own chronograph?)
7) false information about how long do they make their watches and how much effort is put into them (read CNC).
