Rolex

Has anyone noticed that the names on one or two of the Rolex models sometimes don't have a clear meaning? Not to be critical, but Land Dweller as a name sound great on the superficial level. But once you peel away that superficial layer, and look deeper, ...

I'm not always the biggest fan of the Jubilee bracelet. Otherwise, I do like the shape of the case itself!

But for looks, the Jubilee looks more delicate, and I prefer the bolder look of the Oyster bracelet. The President bracelet is another favorite from Rolex - for me.

The dial looks like it has too much text in my eyes. Three lines of text on the top side, and only two lines on the bottom. And this hexagon dial... Reminds me of Lamborghini Huracans, Lalique's Tortue vase, and turtle/tortoise shell patterns.

The hexagons on the dial remind me of a tortoise's shell. Tortoises are land dwellers, they don't fly, they don't swim, they don't even climb trees! ...  

But then I'm not really a big Rolex fan and as names go I think Rolex may have been better off calling this the Air Breather as a follow on from their Air King. Marc

I first thought you were jesting. But seemingly not. At least it seems they have learned to protect the model name appropriately, unlike some other Swiss watch brands in the past 😉

Someone spending more than a minute to have come up with the name 😉 They might just as well have called it ‘human’ - the shorter form of land dweller…

but I do not care for it at all. I am not a fan of integrated bracelets on any watch, I much prefer lugs and bracelets or straps. There are a lot of nice watches with integratred bracelets, just none for me.

Finally someone who isn't beholden to the integrated bracelet craze. I admittedly like integrated bracelets. I might have to repent for my sins! I just like neat and orderly bracelet/strap to case attachments. So curved spring bars get extra points from m... 

What is a land-dweller? Rolex seems to answer: someone like Roger Federer or Yuja Wang: a retired but still very active tennis player and a young and also very active piano player...

There's been a bit of commentary on the name - here's one suggestion for future names - possibly from a rather too cynical point of view. Safe- dweller As I suspect that's where a lot of them will reside. Will be interesting to see where the new movement ...

This “Dweller” discussion reminds of Seiko’s “Master” name fixation. In alphabetical order: Cruising Master 7K36 Field Master 2C21, V175, 5M22, 6R15, 7N35 Fishing Master 7A48 Flight Master 6S37, 7T34, 7T62 Jungle Master 7S36 Land Master 5M45, 5M47, 5R66, ...
