The conclusion seems to be that even with petrochemicals and coal, it's easier to control emissions at an industrial power plant than across many small variable-load automotive engines. And for any given unit of fuel burned, more of it can be converted to motive force via electronic motors than in a 35% efficient internal combustion engine. I still enjoy many gas-powered enthusiast cars, but it does look like the case for electric cars includes a broader understanding of the "long tailpipe" concern regarding fossil fuel power plants - at least in part.
