A look at the Tank Solo XL automatic - entry level luxury

2012 is the year of the Tank and besides the Tank Anglaise which is the major new product line for the year, Cartier recently presented the Tank Solo XL. This is now the entry level mechanical - the previous Tank Solo watches were quartz - Tank watch in the Cartier line-up.

At 31 mm by 40.85 mm long, it is well sized. It is large enough as a men's watch, but also suitable for a lady seeking a larger watch. The brancards of the case have a flat front, as is characteristic of the Tank Solo line.

The case height is 7.65 mm, but it seems slimmer on the wrist due to the domed back.

On the crown sits a synthetic sapphire cabochon, instead of the real sapphires set into the crown of more expensive models.

Inside is the Cartier 049 calibre, which is actually the tried and tested ETA 2892. It has a useful date at six o'clock, and the secret signature at VII.

Three versions are available. Two are steel, one with strap and the other on a bracelet.

The bracelet is solidly made, with screwed links and a double fold, friction fit clasp.

But the variant on a crocodile strap looks much more elegant.

The third version is in 18k rose gold with a steel case back.

There is 24.6 g of gold in the watch, which is about an ounce. I believe this is the most affordable precious metal, mechanical watch Cartier makes today.

Compared with the higher end Cartier watches, like the new Tank Louis Cartier XL for instance, the Tank Solo is evidently an entry level model. The details are not quite as fine as on its higher priced brethren. For instance, the folding clasp on the steel model is tumble polished, rather than mirror finished.

The Tank Solo XL is nicely made, but not as refined as the upper end models. For the price the quality is sufficient. Overall the Tank Solo XL is a very compelling product, especially for someone on a limited budget seeking the classic Cartier Tank style and wants more than a quartz Cartier.

Thank you or this quick review...... I also noticed that there are Ronde XL models with similar price points and the automatic movement, for those who prefer round watches. Bill

Yes indeed the Ronde Solo XL Thanks for reminding me Bill. It is also another affordably priced Cartier but it lacks the cachet of the Tank design, in my opinion. The Tank Solo XL is a standout because it's a Tank, and it's affordable. - SJX

I think this interpretation of the "enty-level" theme is much better ... ... than the introduction of the "Pasha C" several years ago, where the gap between the "real" Pasha and the "C" was enormous. I like this Tank, and think that overall the golden model is the best. To use a stainless steel caseback reduces cost where it d...

The steel case back has some historical precedent Vintage Tank watches used white gold case backs for yellow gold cases. Even though it is obviously a cost cutting measure, it means the watch is less than USD10,000. There is no other gold, mechanical Cartier at that price. - SJX

SJX, lovely pictures, and an excellent report. I love the design of this piece. I like the one in Gold. What would be the price? Either way, gold or SS, this is an amazing watch for someone who needs elegance but is on a tight budget, or also for those who have expensive pieces but need to wear something good lo...

Good to see you here my friend The gold is about USD8000 in Singapore, with 7% tax included. - SJX

I would not mind owning the version in SS with leather strap. Amazing value for money. Looks great.

Relative to the standard Cartier fare this is priced competitively Not many brands can range across such a wide price range, while still maintaining the allure of the brand. - SJX

I agree with you 100%. They look beautiful and elegant. Can you arrange side by side photos of this model with the Rotonde date, which is also 'affordable'?

Dropping by the Cartier boutique...

At ION Orchard mall in Singapore. Here are some of the notable, newly arrived watches. The first is the rarely seen Rotonde de Cartier jumping hours with bear motif in marquetry. This watch was actually launched at SIHH last year, but they are produced at a snail's pace so are still being delivered.
