Cross-country shipping do's and don'ts?

It had to happen some day. One of my watches needs repairing. Okay. That's happened plenty of times before. What's different this time is that the AD I bought it from is no longer an AD for this particular brand. The nearest AD is 450 miles away, and the manufacturer's US facility is on the other side of the continent in New Jersey. I need to send the watch there.

My questions to the group: Which carrier(s) do you prefer to use? Are there pitfalls to insuring a package for $25K? Are there best practices for securely packing a watch? (Cardboard box, lots of bubble wrap, sealed plastic bag, and ????)

Thanks!

Cheers,
Dom

Shipping Watches USPS Registered Hi Dom, Here is my experience with sending a personal watch back for repair twice in two years and it actually is similar to your situation, as I live in the Pacific Northwest and the watch needed to go to JLC USA in NYC. From what I learned by researchin...

registered can be combined with priority at relatively little extra cost, delivery will then generally be 2-3 days & with better tracking (express maill will not work, however)

I second USPS registered If you don't have 2nd party insurance and don't want the hassle of finding one, then the only way to ship fully insured is by USPS registered mail. It takes longer for your shipment to arrive to the recipient using USPS registered mail but it's worth it. ...

Best Practices for packing a high value watc Hi, I agree about USPS Priority Mail Registered with insurance.Note ALL above "services." As far as packaging - 1. Try to use the original thin film watch head protector that came with the watch. If you don't have that anymore, most high end brand AD's ca...

Ethical Dilemma

I had lunch yesterday with the manager of a watch boutique and he shared a not uncommon occurrence in his line of business. On several occasions, customers have brought in a watch for service and the boutique manager has had to share the bad news that the watch is a fake. This is obviously an uncomfortable position for the boutique manager, particularly when the customer responds that he spent a considerable amount of money on the fake watch. As we were discussing this all too frequent event, we contemplated an interesting ethical dilemma.
