I wonder why this particular watch wich was supossed to be the new icon replacing the 5970 was so butchered this year I was so happy to have one last year paid it full retail at my AD and during the whole year i was offered cheaper and cheaper but the che... 

But what's the point? Are you angry if somebody is selling the watch below its retail? Merry Xmas! Kari

A very simple collector comparison would be the manufacturing capacity for Patek of the Ref. 5270 is infinite due to the in-house movement. For 5970 that capacity was limited to the remaining movements on hand. It only makes sense the 5270 would spiral do... 

I'm not following the comments in these posts. What do you people really like about Patek - the quality or the appreciation? If you think of it like a car, it starts depreciating the moment you drive it off the lot. If you don't like that, don't buy a new... 

movement is much better, its impossible not to notice it when you wind it, and toy around with chrono. As for the looks, its a matter of taste

you understood or at least read the features & benefits of the "new" movements? If we talk about beauty only, no need for further discussions. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If we talk about investment only, this is the WRONG place. Talk to you... 

The Panerai in-house movement vs. ETA-based movement. But there are merits on each movement. We live in a free market and everything happens for a reason.

because at least in one case a (so called) in-house movement from Panerai, comes in fact from Piaget. I liked the new watch a lot and was close to buy my first Panerai, until I saw the movement in detail. Panerai was so proud about there novelty ... Nothi... 

watch is the same, even if some are selling at lower. The real question is, do you love it or not? You talk about batches being produced, its not new, as always, Patek throw them at the market, its available in several place, sometimes at a discount. Then... 

In fact the issue here is that i like a brand protecting it's customers and i was used to have this image from Patek the rarity was a part of the beauty It is a very nice watch and i enjoy it but i would be happier if it was not sold below official retail... 

... which is fine, but you get punished sometimes, again, you didn't loose until you intend to sell. Now you will have to count on something else, time might help you, and patience.

If you do not love the watch for its own sake... well, you know the rest. Without speaking directly about value... let's face it, little by little, year after year, various illusions about Patek are being shattered. I believe the independents and especial... 

Well let me say, as a person that owns a couple 5070's and a couple 5970's as well as the 5270...I could not be happier with this watch. The size, and I have a small wrist, is really nice, the legibility is awesome(I still have a tough time with the day a... 

but at the same time the drop in value on the secondary market has been equally amazing, not something Patek collectors have been accustomed to. Not sure if this reflects the watch, supply, economy, etc, but certainly a combination of factors. The good ne...

You have to admit can be a bit aggravating to see a unexpected downturn play out, for whatever the reason. It's human nature. That being said, I personally am not sure the value of 5270 (a watch I like and appreciate) ever held up to begin with to ever be... 

In general we all have to pay the same price, but the value of something depends on us. Our knowledge, our preferences, our experiences, our taste, our ... . The personal value should be the driver for our purchases, nothing else. I see lots of improvemen...

I bought my 5270G late November 2011 at full msrp. I love it and if I was offered a return for full money I wouldn't take it! My 5970P has been very lonely since the 5270G arrived.

And i will add to your ending that so many people will link value of things to the price. Some great things that seems cheap do not get the recognition deserved just because its low priced

sure, but historically this is type of thing has happened time and time again. The 5960 and 5980 references come to mind. We all were amazed at the folks who were paying list + just to get it. The enameled world time probably represents the most current "... 

the 5070 and 5970 were an exception, not the rule The 5070 probably because of several reasons - a big size for a Patek an the market demands bigger watches. Not always 48 mm but 42 is a perfect size for everybody. Those who prefer smaller will say the 50... 

It's a luxury item with a recommended price, not a price that is absolutely fixed in the open marketplace. Frankly I'm happy if the price drops and I can find it cheaper. It means it's closer to me beings able to afford it. But then I don't think of watch...
