Patek Philippe

It's a great discussion piece...

The Cubitus could be spearheading a resurgence in high end square integrated sports watches. History doesn't repeat itself, but it rhymes. Cartier Santos may be the original design, but Cartier is now more or less putting modest movements into the standard Santos. Would you be surprised to see a mechanical square Royal Oak or a square 222/Overseas within 2 - 3 years? They are likely already in development.

The design is conservative and Patek was not tempted to design a new base movement or a new bracelet. It would be surprising if the 5821 landed up being the best in this class, when the square integrated sports watch trend has played out to its end. I don't expect AP or Vacheron to try to stand out either, which will leave room for Independents to introduce square models that feel more "special" than the releases from the trinity. We've seen some interesting releases from Charles Zuber and Gerald Charles, but nothing yet on the level of a Berneron.
