Watch savants historically have always complained first and have eventually turned around...
The launch of any watch - especially one that is similar to an existing iconic watch - is always very contentious. Especially on the internet. People have strong emotions. Some people are invested - for example many of our members have the Nautilus watch themselves and may feel this watch steps on their toes a bit. The green dial 5711 Nautilus was intended for very special Patek customers too. And those customers may feel slightly surprised that this same shade of green is now offered in a more permanent offering. This is the first time Patek Philippe has offered a new line of watches in about 25 years. The last new line was launched as the 24 in 1999. You can argue that the new round 24 pieces is a new line too - and that was only a few years ago.
The last men's watch was launched in 1997, so roughly 27 years ago. Also, to the casual observer and even the critical observer, many will say that this Cubitus, line is "too similar" to the Nautilus. Some people have used this "fact" (yes, too similar is an opinion, but let's call it a fact for the sake of argument) to say that this latest design was a "lazy design" (no insult to any of the designers at Patek Philippe at being lazy, it's just a figure of speech) which is probably a valid opinion. But! Despite all of this, Patek Philippe should embrace all of these opinions! Because it shows
how highly revered the brand actually is and how high of a standard the public holds this brand in esteem!
In the end, watch tastes are very personal to each individual. Watch savants historically have generally complained first and also historically eventually turned around and accepted the product. Code 11.59 was seen negatively at first, seen as too modern, a piece of modern art (modern art is highly debated among art circles), and today seems to be settling in. That being said, I would expect this watch to be more accepted in the coming years!
