Proven usability
Actually some time ago I, like you did, asked myself the question about practical aspect of Chronograph Complication. I haven't found any reply until I read in one article the following words: "DOCTOR'S WATCH". It was Evrica! Really, doctors, lowyers, personal teachers work on hourly basis! If you have to measure time precisely when you work with another person you are to have chronograph.
Golden/platinum chronograph tells your potential client your level of hourly payment, of course
Every complication is useful but not for everyone.

and being beautifull is imo the most important when you buy a high end watch If it just needs to be usefull, a 100 euro quartz will do Now, about the complications ... I think a moonphase , a tourbillon and even a repeater are less usefull than a chronogr...
Chronograph: the only useful complication
Utility is a function of the user as well as the tool. I use a chronograph many times a day to time the duration of tasks (phone calls, reviewing documents, writing reports, etc.) for billing purposes. There's no other complication that would be as useful...

and I just love the way they look. You are right that I rarely use the chronograph. If you really want to time something accurately use a Timex or a Casio that can give you 1/100 seconds or better. But, as stated by others, there is more to a complication...

is hursh word, i find annual or perpetual complication more useful in daily use rather than chrono so i would choose for example 5726 over 5980, but sometimes i've got thing for simplicty and i would choose 5711 over 5726, people likings and loves change ...
