I'm going through a bit of the same thing myself with regard to a purchase made at a branded clothing boutique -- I liked one piece, but they didn't have my size and said that they would have it sent. The box arrived, and I wasn't certain that the piece I liked was identical -- did it have a zipper neck, or buttons? But I cut off the tags anyway.
Now I think that the sweater is the "wrong" one -- but I am reluctant even to bring it up with the retailer given my error in cutting off the tags -- and can't imagine that I would get on a public forum complaining if I got up the nerve to try to exchange the item and had been refused...

So you would expect the next customer walking into the Lange store to accept a strap that was used? Would you accept someone else's used strap? If the answer is no then you can see Lange is not at fault. Personally I think they did the right thing.
