Completely reprehensible behavior.
Usually (AFAIK), the airlines routinely overbook planes, but end up with last minute cancellations. It did not happen in this scenario. I do not want to speculate as to what UA could have done to accommodate ALL passengers, but it certainly was not what they actually did.
I have no idea about legality of the contract one agrees to upon purchasing a ticket, but I do know that this is immoral, unethical, and plain stupid. Any one with any sense could have predicted something bad happenning when forcefully removing passengers.
Since US-based airlines are already terrible and cannot compete against the Etihads, Singapores, and other foreign airlines, this might be a spark that brings (at least UA) to its knees. I know I wouldn't shed a tear for any of them (OK, maybe Jet Blue).
I have been flying my whole life to almost every corner of the world. I have seen and witnessed some ridiculous situations. But I have never been so disgusted by the airlines' behavior as I am today. And will try to a
avoid UA at all cost going forward.
