They should have kept increasing the compensation offer until they had enough volunteers. At some point, people will accept. Airlines take a gamble by overbooking and they make millions of dollars on the bet. When they lose the bet, they should be prepared to pay the appropriate price to the passenger who purchased the ticket with the understanding that they had a confirmed seat.

Yeah, I've been denied boarding at the gate, but never once I've already been seated.
