From reading online it seems like it's the right of the airline to boot paying customers if they choose to

 

I don't see anything wrong with that from a business perspective because they have to protect themselves from unforeseen circumstances. 


The passenger is also in the wrong, as this is a private property, whether he paid or not. He has been asked to leave first, and failing which, security was called to step in. 


But the situation was mishandled by the airport authorities and the airline. It will be very costly. 


Bottom line for me airline not in the wrong, but could have done better with the damage control.
