I think it is difficult indeed
especially since it is also a lot about subjective elements (not only but they have a significant place in this field).
Hence, prices, finishing, reliability (based on statistics or on the post we might see on forums and so on) are really difficult issues to study and judge.
As I said in Nicolas' post our appreciation of a watch is more than studying each element seperately. That's why I wouldn't necessarily focus on the drawbacks only but how the whole thing works.
This being said, there are of course elements that are crippling for each of us.
As you say through your example, it is important to take some distance and decide what to buy and what not to get. If we don't trust something or don't like the way it is managed by a brand then, we should look next door, to compare (sometimes the grass is not greener elsewhere) or because we might find something we finally like better in the end.
Then the most negative issues will, as you say, push brands to bring a correction.
