Patek Philippe

Technology typically advances......

......yet watches are as much art as they are science. Perhaps more art than science at this level.

It is always easy to argue that the most technologically advanced development is superior. Yet......

.....they don't make Picassos like they used to.

Genuinely, I see absolutely no point in the typical debate on this forum about this one being better than that one or whatever. It is pointless. We all have different criteria for judging a watch. It seems so pointless arguing this is better or that is better.

What is evident is what people like "now". People post what fascinates them at this moment. And as much as i have sympathy for the view that we do not know where tastes will move to in coming years, it is absolutely and totally irrelevant to consider as popularity in 2030 means nothing to us today. We can be open-minded about it, but lets not fool ourselves in thinking that we can predict it.

We focus today on what gives us passion today. Trying to guess tomorrow's passion du jour is just not as relevant as discussing the here and now. If the 5110 maintains its popularity, then great. Its just how it is. If the 5230 takes over, then great, its just how it is.

Arguing that popular models of today may not be so popular tomorrow seems, at least to me, as totally irrelevant.

Posters of all watches...popular or not....should be equally encouraged. I have a Calatrava 2509. I am not sure, but I think it is probably the least popular watch on the Patek forum as nobody else seems to have one. Why are successful v unsuccessful references even debated? It makes no sense. It adopts so many questionable assumptions and to my mind achieves absolutely nothing at all. We buy what we like. If people are influenced by what others like......then that is the market....its what happens. We should neither encourage it or discourage it...its just what is. And its not socialism.
